Following a 7.0 magnitude earthquake which struck the Haitian coast on 12 January 2010. The Government of Haiti has requested international assistance and clusters have been activated. The International Federation sent a Shelter Coordination Team to support the Haitian government in the inter-agency coordination of shelter actors. Hikaru Kitai was deployed as Shelter Cluster Coordinator for Jacmel hub. Her key role was to contribute towards the effective provision of emergency shelter assistance to the affected population through the timely and efficient coordination of shelter agencies within the Shelter Cluster in support of the national authorities. This prioritized the rapid provision of basic shelter relief assistance to affected households on a large scale and ensuring consistency in the type of shelter assistance across different agencies where possible and as appropriate. She acted as a focal point in representing emergency shelter and transitional shelter needs to UN, donor and government representative assigned to the hub to formulate shelter strategy for the area.
